For the young, beautiful and wealthy, gaining access to know musicians, I imagine, is easy. The Average Girl, however, needs a bit of luck.
Luck is when opportunity meets preparation. My goal is to show how opportunities can be created and to help you be prepared if/when these opportunities present themselves. Remember, not every show is an opportunity but any show could be, so it's important to be prepared.
But Aren't They Just Using You?
I usually answer with a - "Aren't I using them for a picture and a story?" The short answer is no. If you think hooking-up with that OMG so hot guitar player will make him fall instantly in love and the two of you will live happily ever after on the English countryside spending your days making babies and your summers at the property in the south of France, you're delusional. Being a groupie is about having fun....that's it. You're not Penny Lane.
Know Who You Are
Most "groupies" fall into one of three categories: Groupies, Band Aids and Starfucks. Groupies are the girls that like musicians in general. Band Aids are the fan girls...they're in it to get with that one particular performer. The Starfucks like to be with anyone who's famous. I tend to be a groupie/band aid. I've gone into situations looking to hook-up with one particular person who does it for me and other times I've found myself completely turned on by someone unexpected. For me, seeing a man on stage with a guitar is an aphrodisiac. I get off on giving pleasure to this guy with who wrote a certain song that I love. You need to know what you're comfortable with personally and sexually. Will you feel guilty if afterword you discover he has a wife? Sexually, I've never encountered anything too freaky, nor have I encountered anyone who was overly aggressive, but I've heard stories. Know you're sexual boundaries (anal? threesome? voyeurism?). And since we're talking about sexual boundaries, for Christ sakes, always, always, always use a condom. Keep a couple in your purse. For reals.
